Where's the beef?

Supposedly, Rick Scott bought the Republican Primary for governor of Florida for $40 million. If the salary for the governor was $200,000 (exaggerated) per year and he term limited out in eight years, that would be 4 percent of his investment into the office at the end of eight years. It makes good campaign fodder, but sounds a little absurd when you analyze it. Someone explain to me what you get in return when you buy an election and you are worth $200 million. Benefits? ...more

Local sports briefs

Tour of Sebring Bicycle Ride SEBRING More than 250 bicyclists will be riding in the 28th Annual Tour of Sebring on Sept. 4, 5 and 6 here in Highlands County. The Tour of Sebring, co-sponsored by the Kenilworth Lodge and the Highlands Pedalers bicycling club, features rides of varying distances including 31 miles, 62 miles and a 100 miles to Bok Tower in Lake Wales. These rides are fully supported with mobile "sag" service and rest stops. Helmets are mandatory. Riders, drawn from throughout the state of Florida, look forward to biking on lightly- traveled roads, enjoying rural scenery and charming small towns. All of the rides leave from the Kenilworth Lodge (phone 863-385-0111). Rays game

I am responding to the writer who complained about going to a Tampa Bay Rays game. He complained that the Rays were not Yankee fan-friendly by having the mascot, Raymond, in the way and not showing instant replays when the Yanks made a good play. I am the biggest Rays fan on earth and I love Tropicana Field. It is fan friendly and everyone can have fun there. There are numerous activities to do other than watch the game such as "You Be the Announcer," live Rays tank, and baseball videogames. When the Yanks come to the Trop, I hate it because half of the fans there are not Rays fans and New York is not near Florida. ...more
